How to answer a cue card

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for up to two minutes. Use your minute to jot down keywords for each bullet point, start with a clear opening sentence and finish with a short reflection. Talking for the full two minutes matters: stopping early limits your fluency score. For a step-by-step method, read how to speak for two minutes in Part 2.

IELTS Speaking Part 2: common questions

How long is IELTS Speaking Part 2?

You get one minute to prepare and then speak for one to two minutes. The examiner stops you at two minutes, so aim to speak for almost the full time. The whole Speaking test lasts 11 to 14 minutes.

What happens if I stop before two minutes?

The examiner may ask one or two short follow-up questions. Stopping very early limits how much language you show, which can lower your fluency and vocabulary scores.

Can I make notes in Part 2?

Yes. You receive paper and a pencil during the one-minute preparation time. Write keywords for each bullet point, not full sentences.

How many cue cards should I practise?

Practise a range of topic types (a person, a place, an object, an event) rather than memorising answers. Examiners notice rehearsed speech, and the real card is often different from any you prepared.
