Frequently asked questions

How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?

The overall band is the average of your Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking scores, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and an average ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band.

What is 6.75 rounded to in IELTS?

An average of 6.75 rounds up to an overall band 7.0.

What is 6.25 rounded to in IELTS?

Do Writing and Speaking count more than Listening and Reading?

No. All four sections carry equal weight in the overall band: each contributes one quarter of the average.

Is the overall band calculated the same way for Academic and General Training?

Yes. Both versions use the same rule: the average of the four section bands, rounded to the nearest half or whole band.

What do I need in each section for an overall 7.0?

Several combinations work. For example 7, 7, 7, 7 gives 7.0, and 7, 7, 6.5, 7 gives an average of 6.875, which also rounds up to 7.0. Check your own scores with the calculator above.
