Band 7 sample answer

I think one of the most important inventions in modern history is the refrigerator. It is easy to forget about it because it is just a quiet box in the corner of the kitchen, but life would be very different without it.

The modern electric refrigerator became common in homes during the twentieth century, and today almost every family has one. People use it every day to keep milk, meat, vegetables and medicine fresh. My grandmother often tells me that in her village they used to dry fruit on the roof and store food in a cold cellar, and they had to cook everything within a day or two in summer.

For me, the main benefit is health. Cold storage reduces food poisoning and makes it possible to buy groceries once a week instead of every day. It also saves money because less food is thrown away. Last summer our fridge broke down during a heatwave, and I realised how much we depend on it when we lost a whole pot of soup and a lot of meat. So, even though it is not as exciting as the internet or the aeroplane, I believe it has improved ordinary life more quietly but just as deeply.

If I had to choose one more reason, I would say that the fridge has changed family life too. Mothers no longer need to spend the whole day preparing food, so they have more time for work, rest and study, and that social effect is easy to overlook.
