Band 7+ sample essay
A growing number of companies are testing a four-day working week. Although this change creates some practical challenges, I believe that its advantages outweigh its disadvantages.
The biggest advantage is that employees have more time for rest, family and hobbies, which improves their well-being. Workers who feel less stressed tend to take fewer sick days and make fewer mistakes. Several trials have shown that productivity does not fall, because people use their time more efficiently when they know they have a long weekend ahead. Employers may also save money on office costs, and staff save on commuting.
However, there are drawbacks. In some sectors, such as hospitals, shops and public transport, services must be available every day, so a shorter week is difficult to organise. In other cases, employees may have to work longer hours on the four days to complete the same tasks, which could be tiring. Customers might also find it harder to reach companies during the day off.
These problems can be reduced by using shifts, so that different groups of employees take different days off, and by introducing the change gradually.
Employees themselves would benefit in other ways, too. With an extra free day each week, they can attend medical appointments, study part-time or take care of relatives without using their annual leave. This flexibility makes jobs more attractive, which helps companies to keep their best workers and reduces the cost of hiring and training replacements.
In conclusion, a four-day week offers real benefits for health, productivity and happiness, and with flexible planning, its disadvantages can be managed.
