Band 7+ sample essay
Increasingly, school leavers are choosing to delay university in order to travel, volunteer or work. Although this choice carries some risks, I believe that a well-planned gap year is usually beneficial.
The main advantage is personal development. After years of studying, students gain independence and confidence by working or living abroad. They learn practical skills such as managing money, solving problems and working with different people. A year of experience also helps students to understand what they really want to study, so they are less likely to drop out of a course they chose without thinking. Many universities report that returning students are more focused and motivated.
On the other hand, a gap year has drawbacks. Some students find it hard to return to a routine of academic study after a long break. Travelling can be expensive, and families may not be able to afford it. A delay also means that students start their careers a year later than their classmates.
However, these risks are limited if the year has a clear purpose, such as paid work, a volunteering project or a course related to the future degree.
Employers frequently value the skills that students develop in this period. A year of volunteering or working abroad shows initiative, adaptability and the ability to communicate with different people, all of which stand out on a CV. For many graduates, these experiences make the difference when they apply for their first job.
In conclusion, a gap year can bring maturity, experience and motivation, and its disadvantages can be reduced with planning, so the benefits are greater overall.
