Band 7+ sample essay
Millions of people travel abroad every year, making tourism one of the largest industries in the world. Although it creates some problems, I believe that its advantages outweigh its disadvantages, provided that it is carefully managed.
The most obvious benefit is economic. Tourism creates jobs in hotels, restaurants, transport and souvenir shops, and it brings foreign money into the country. In poorer regions, it may be the main source of income. This money can also be used to restore historic buildings and protect nature reserves, which might otherwise be neglected. In addition, meeting visitors from other countries encourages understanding between cultures and makes local people proud of their heritage.
On the other hand, tourism can cause serious damage. Large numbers of visitors may pollute beaches, wear down ancient monuments and put pressure on water and electricity supplies. Local residents sometimes suffer from higher prices and crowded streets. Moreover, jobs in tourism are often seasonal and badly paid.
These risks can be reduced if authorities limit visitor numbers, charge fees for protected sites and promote eco-friendly tourism.
Local participation is another key factor. When residents own small hotels and guesthouses, and when guides and craftspeople come from the area, the money stays in the community instead of leaving with international companies. Governments can support this by offering loans and training to local entrepreneurs who want to work in tourism.
In conclusion, tourism brings valuable income, jobs and cultural exchange, and with sensible regulation its harmful effects can be controlled, so the benefits are greater overall.
