Band 7+ sample essay
The growing popularity of fast food is a worrying trend in many countries. This essay will outline the main health problems that result from it and suggest several practical ways to address them.
The most serious problem is the rise in diseases linked to poor diet. Fast food is usually high in fat, sugar and salt, so people who eat it regularly are more likely to become overweight and to develop heart disease or diabetes. These conditions are expensive to treat, and they place a heavy burden on public healthcare systems. In addition, people with poor health are often less productive at work, which has an economic cost for society as a whole.
There are several ways to tackle this problem. Firstly, schools should teach children about nutrition and cooking so that they learn to make healthier choices from an early age. Secondly, governments could require clear labels showing calories and sugar content, and place higher taxes on the least healthy products, using the revenue to subsidise fresh fruit and vegetables. Finally, restaurants can be encouraged to offer healthier options, for example grilled dishes and salads, at competitive prices.
Such measures need cooperation, but they are realistic. Several countries that have taxed sugary drinks have already reported a fall in consumption.
Parents also play an important part. When families cook together at home and eat meals at the table, children learn that food is more than a quick snack, and they are less likely to depend on fast food. Community programmes that teach simple, cheap recipes can make this change realistic even for busy households.
In conclusion, fast food contributes to obesity, illness and higher healthcare costs, but education, labelling and fair pricing can reduce its harmful effects.
