Band 7+ sample essay

Artificial intelligence is now able to perform tasks that once required human workers, from answering customer questions to analysing medical images. Although this brings efficiency, it also creates serious challenges. This essay will discuss the main problems and suggest practical responses.

The most immediate problem is unemployment. Jobs involving routine tasks, such as data entry or basic customer service, are the easiest to automate, so thousands of employees may lose their income. The effects will not be equal: highly skilled workers who can use AI tools are likely to earn more, while people without such skills may find it difficult to find new positions, widening the gap between rich and poor. Older workers, who may find it harder to retrain, are particularly at risk.

Several solutions are available. Governments and employers should fund retraining programmes so that workers can move into growing sectors such as healthcare, renewable energy or technology support. Schools and universities also need to adapt by teaching digital literacy, creativity and problem-solving, which machines cannot easily copy. During the transition, temporary financial support and career advice can protect families from hardship. Policymakers may also consider shorter working weeks or tax incentives for companies that retain and retrain their staff, so that the productivity gains created by machines are shared more fairly instead of benefiting only a small number of business owners.

Companies themselves can help by introducing AI gradually and assigning displaced staff to new roles instead of dismissing them immediately.

In conclusion, AI poses a real risk of job losses and inequality, but through retraining, updated education and responsible business practices, societies can turn this technology into an opportunity.
