Social Media and Young People: IELTS Speaking Part 3 questions and answers

Examiners want a balanced evaluation. Mention benefits such as contact and learning, then risks such as comparison, distraction and privacy.

Questions and sample answers

Why is social media so popular among teenagers?

It lets them stay in touch with friends at any time, share photos and follow trends. For teenagers, belonging to a group is very important, and social platforms give them that feeling. Also, it is free, easy to use and always in their pocket, so it is difficult to resist.

What are the main disadvantages of social media for young people?

I would say comparison and distraction. Teenagers see perfect photos of other people's lives and may feel that their own life is not good enough. In addition, endless scrolling takes time from sleep, homework and face-to-face friendships, which can harm both results and mood. Setting daily time limits is one practical way to reduce these effects.

Can social media be useful for education?

Yes, if it is used purposefully. Students can find explanations on video channels, join study groups and practise languages with people abroad. Some of my friends improved their English by following English-speaking creators. The problem is that learning content competes with entertainment, so self-discipline is required.

Should there be an age limit for using social media?

I think there should, and parents should enforce it. Younger children are more vulnerable to bullying, strangers and inappropriate content. A limit of around thirteen or fourteen, with parental supervision, seems reasonable, although it is difficult to check ages online in practice. Education about online safety at school would be a useful addition to any law.

Do you think people communicate better or worse because of social media?

Both, actually. We communicate more often and with more people, which is a great advantage for families who live far apart. But the quality can be lower, because short messages and emojis cannot replace tone of voice or a real conversation. Many people now prefer typing to calling.
