Band 7+ sample essay
Physical education is part of almost every school's programme, but there is disagreement about its purpose. Some people believe that sport should focus on competition, whereas others stress health and enjoyment. In my opinion, the main goal should be health and participation, with competition as an optional extra.
Supporters of competitive sport argue that it motivates students to improve and teaches important life skills. Pupils learn teamwork, discipline and how to cope with both winning and losing. School teams can also create a sense of pride and belonging, and they sometimes uncover talented athletes who might later represent their country.
However, focusing on winning can exclude many children. Those who are less athletic may feel embarrassed and lose interest in exercise, which is a serious problem at a time when childhood obesity is increasing. A programme based on health and enjoyment, with a wide variety of activities such as dance, swimming and cycling, encourages every pupil to be active and helps them build habits that last a lifetime. It also reduces the risk of injuries caused by excessive pressure to win.
Competition can still exist for those who want it, through voluntary school teams and friendly tournaments.
Teachers can also adapt activities to different abilities. For example, a running lesson can reward personal improvement instead of the fastest time, and team games can be organised with mixed groups so that every child contributes. Such approaches keep the positive side of competition while protecting pupils who are less confident in their physical abilities.
In conclusion, competitive sport has some benefits, but school sport should mainly promote health and enjoyment for all, with competition as an additional choice.
