Band 7+ sample essay

Government budgets are limited, so choices have to be made about what to support. Some people believe that research in science deserves more funding, while others favour the arts. I think science should receive priority, although the arts also deserve fair support.

Scientific research has produced the technologies that improve our daily lives, from vaccines and clean water systems to computers and renewable energy. Investment in research can lead to medical breakthroughs and new industries, creating jobs and economic growth. Moreover, many global challenges, such as climate change and pandemics, can only be solved with scientific knowledge, which makes it a matter of public safety.

On the other hand, the arts are essential for a healthy society. Museums, theatres and music give people a shared identity and a way to express emotions. Cultural activities also attract tourists and support creative industries that employ many people. For some individuals, art is the main source of meaning and well-being.

However, the arts can attract funding from private sponsors, ticket sales and donations more easily than basic research, which rarely produces immediate profit.

The two areas are also more connected than they appear. Designers use art to make scientific discoveries understandable, and musicians and engineers work together to create new instruments and sound technology. When both are supported, ideas can pass between them, and the combination often leads to innovations that neither field would produce alone.

In conclusion, both science and the arts enrich society, but because research addresses urgent problems and is difficult to fund privately, I believe the government should prioritise it while still supporting culture.
