Band 7+ sample essay

Celebrities are followed by millions of young fans, so their behaviour has a great deal of influence. Some people see this influence as beneficial, while others consider it harmful. In my view, the effect can be positive, but at present the negative side is stronger.

On the positive side, many famous people inspire young people to work hard and follow their dreams. A sports star who describes years of training can motivate teenagers to be disciplined, and celebrities who support charities or speak about education and mental health can draw attention to important causes. Their fame gives them a voice that ordinary people do not have.

However, the negative effects are also significant. Social media shows celebrities in a carefully edited way, with perfect bodies, expensive clothes and glamorous holidays. Young people may compare themselves unfavourably and feel unhappy, or believe that success depends on appearance and wealth rather than effort. Some fans also copy harmful behaviour, such as extreme dieting or reckless spending, simply because their idol does it.

Parents and schools therefore have an important role in helping teenagers think critically about what they see.

Another point worth mentioning is the rise of social media influencers, who often appear ordinary and honest, so teenagers trust them completely. When these influencers promote products without explaining that they are paid, young viewers may spend money they do not have. Clear rules about advertising would reduce this risk without limiting freedom of expression.

In conclusion, celebrities can inspire and support good causes, but their influence is often negative, so young people need guidance and a wider range of role models.
