Band 7+ sample essay

With increasing competition for science and technology jobs, some argue that schools should reduce time for art and music. I disagree with this view, because creative subjects bring benefits that are important for every student.

Art and music develop creativity, which is a valuable skill in any career, including science and engineering. Playing an instrument or painting requires patience and concentration, and group activities such as a school choir teach teamwork and confidence. These subjects also give children a way to express emotions, which supports their mental health. For students who find academic subjects difficult, success in art or music can raise self-esteem and motivation to study.

It is true that science and maths are essential in modern economies, and schools should give them enough time. However, the two areas are not in competition. Studies often link musical training to better memory and attention, and design and visual thinking are important in fields such as architecture and medicine. A student who only studies calculations may become a skilled technician, but not necessarily an innovative thinker.

A school day has enough room for both, if the time is planned carefully.

Finally, many employers say that creativity and communication are the qualities that they struggle to find in graduates. Subjects such as drama and art encourage students to present ideas, work in groups and think in original ways. These skills are difficult to measure in an exam, but they are exactly what modern workplaces demand.

In conclusion, art and music should remain a core part of education because they develop creativity, teamwork and well-being, and these qualities help students succeed in all areas.
